Zipcar and the “Knight Rider” App

Imagine using your mobile device to reserve the use of a car, located within walking distance, at a moments notice – with gas, insurance, parking and maintenance all taken care of, so all that ‘s left for you to do is drive the thing.  A radical concept sure, but this is the supposition on which Zipcar, an American membership-based carsharing company, have built their innovative business model.  Owning a car is so last Century! 

It is no surprise that the company that has transformed the relationship between driver and automobile, is now integrating app and mobile services into the centre of their business organisation and strategy. Zipcar CEO Scott Griffith outlined the company’s vision during his recent keynote presentation at CTIA’s MobileCon in San Diego, where he offered a glimpse into how the Zipcar smartphone app will be transformed into a “in-car assistant”.
